چکیده

We examined the relation between the emergence of visual selection mechanisms and object perception in infancy. Twenty-two 3-month-old infants participated in both a perceptual completion and a visual search task. In the perceptual completion task, infants were habituated to a partly occluded moving rod and subsequently viewed unoccluded broken and complete rod test stimuli. We presented the same infants with visual search displays in which single targets of varying levels of salience were cast among homogeneous static vertical distracters. Infants who provided evidence of a functional visual selective attention mechanism in the search task were the same infants whose posthabituation preference indicated unity perception in the completion task. Index Terms Visual Attention, Infancy, Object Perception, Oculomotor Control.

Effectiveness of a Combined Training Package on Strengthening Visual Perceptual Skills in Preschool Children

Objectives: Paper and pencil exercises are extensively used to enhance children’s visual perceptual skills, while exercises involving volumetric shapes have been neglected. The present study aimed to develop a combined training package, including volumetric shapes and paper and pencil exercises, and to investigate its effectiveness in strengthening the visual perceptual skills of preschool chil...

The effects of visual search efficiency on object-based attention.

The attentional prioritization hypothesis of object-based attention (Shomstein & Yantis in Perception & Psychophysics, 64, 41-51, 2002) suggests a two-stage selection process comprising an automatic spatial gradient and flexible strategic (prioritization) selection. The combined attentional priorities of these two stages of object-based selection determine the order in which participants will s...

Attentional Selection during Preparation of Prehension Movements

In two experiments coupling between dorsal attentional selection for action and ventral attentional selection for perception during preparation of prehension movements was examined. In a dual-task paradigm subjects had to grasp an X-shaped object with either the left or the right hand's thumb and index finger. Simultaneously a discrimination task was used to measure visual attention prior to th...

Activity in human visual and parietal cortex reveals object-based attention in working memory.

Visual attention enables observers to select behaviorally relevant information based on spatial locations, features, or objects. Attentional selection is not limited to physically present visual information, but can also operate on internal representations maintained in working memory (WM) in service of higher-order cognition. However, only little is known about whether attention to WM contents...

Does feature similarity facilitate attentional selection?

Object-based attention enables us to simultaneously select and report two features from the same visual object. Does feature-based attention contribute similarly to visual selection? In the present study, we investigated the concurrent discrimination of two motion fields with a divided attention paradigm. We found that dual-task performance improved when the two fields conformed to a continuous...
